10 Video Game Reboots You Didn't Know Were Happening

5. Virtua Fighter

The upcoming new Virtua Fighter game will be the fighting series' first mainline entry in 20 years, though tellingly Sega has refrained from referring to it as Virtua Fighter 6.

The game was revealed last year and will be the first entry in the series not to be developed by original outfit Sega AM2, with Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (Like a Dragon) instead taking the reins.

Sega have dubbed the new game a reimagining of the series with redesigned classic fighters joining wholly new combatants, and in a series first it will also feature a single-player campaign.

Producer Riichiro Yamada has stated the team's desire to make a game that's both familiar to fans of the series and accessible for total newcomers - pretty much the aim of every single reboot ever, then.

With the resurgence in popularity of the Street Fighter and Tekken franchises in recent years, Sega clearly hopes that Virtua Fighter can grab a piece of the pie for itself.

While no firm release date is set, the combat system was said to be 70% complete as of August, so a 2026 bow is probably on the cards.
