10 Video Game Remakes That Erase Their Iconic Originals
3. Sonic Mania (Levels From Sonic 1-3)

Not a full-on remake of all three games, but for the levels that appear in Sonic Mania that were first in those earlier games, Christian Whitehead and his team at Headcannon have knocked it out the park in terms of modernisation and artistic flourish.
Essentially being granted the keys to the kingdom, Whitehead's existence as a prolific fan-modder was enough for Sega to let him make one official instalment, peppering brand-new levels alongside the likes of Green Hill Zone or Chemical Plant. These hand-picked classics retain their two Act structure, though the second half is where the developers inject all manner of new paths, enemies and means of traversal.
Sonic Mania's array of abilities for the Blue Blur are an amalgamation of everything he acquired across the trilogy too, so applying such a proficient move set to the best version of each level is a no-brainer. Play the originals for archive's sake, but Mania's fan-focused rework runs circles around them.
