In Bend Studio's adventure title, a bounty hunter called Deacon is tasked with eliminating zombie-like creatures called Freakers. While traversing through the post-apocalyptic lands, the badass hero is assisted by O' Brian, a masked researcher who rescued Deacon's wife from the zombie outbreak.

Even though the main campaign has a conventional conclusion, the secret ending completely flips the script. After beating the game, Deacon will receive a radio call from O' Brian if he completes three specific side-quests.

After meeting up with O' Brian, the researcher pulls off his mask, revealing himself as a Freaker. Despite the fact these creatures are meant to be feral and violent, O' Brian has maintained his personality and intellect. While players are still reeling from this revelation, the screen cuts to black.

Obviously, this bombshell teased the sequel would go in a bold new direction. At least, it would've if Days Gone 2 ever came out. Though the creator, Jeff Ross, had huge plans for the follow-up, the studio pulled the plug on the project.

Although Days Gone's secret ending isn't bad in its own right, it's annoying in hindsight because it never went anywhere.
