3. The Nero Sidequest - Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy IX has one of the obscurest sidequests in the franchise (which is saying a lot).
After returning to the Tantalus Hideout while on Disc 4, Zidane's party will find a member of the Nero family, who's looking for his brothers. If your party returns here after facing a boss or watching a cutscene, you'll encounter another Nero member, who also states he's looking for his brother. After performing this action five times, the last Nero family member will offer a reward.
Although the quest isn't difficult when you know how to pull it off, it's time-consuming and requires a lot of backtracking. And since there's no indication this sub-mission exists, players would expect an incredible reward upon completing it. So, what do the heroes receive for this long-winded quest?
A Protect Ring. And this isn't a special kind of Protect Ring. This is the same artefact you are rewarded for after partaking in significantly less tedious missions.
Even though FFIX has far more difficult sidequests, (especially the one involving Ozma) you receive a proportionate reward for your troubles. However, the reward here is so infinitesimal, it's downright insulting.
