2. Moon Presence Ending - Bloodborne
Bloodborne is a grim and oppressive title that conveys an inescapable sense of unease, mystery, and foreboding. For this reason, nobody should've expected an uplifting ending.
With that said, players assumed the climax would offer some sense of closure, especially after completing a series of daunting tasks to unlock the true ending.
But that wasn't the case. Throughout the main campaign, The Hunter can find three umbilical cords, which were formed when the Great Ones attempted to reproduce with humans. After consuming these well-hidden collectibles, a new ending will be unlocked after defeating a secret boss.
In this ending, The Hunter becomes a Great One, which causes him to transform into an infant slug. Although this metamorphosis symbolises rebirth and ascension, it's incredibly anti-climactic, especially after everything players had to go through to unlock it. Rather than feeling a sense of completion, watching The Hunter permanently lose his humanity comes across as disturbing and emotionally hollow.
Being a FromSoftware title, players shouldn't have anticipated a conventional reward for their efforts. Having said that, they probably expected something more captivating than watching the hero turn into a baby snail.
