5. Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time
When a fourth Crash Bandicoot game was first announced, there was considerable skepticism of developer Toys for Bob's ability to deliver a sequel on-par with the original trilogy, especially given that the series had spent more than 20 years falling short of them.
But Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time was an absolutely delightful platforming sequel which paid loving homage to its predecessors but also felt like a distinctly unique game in its own right, especially with the introduction of power-granting Quantum Masks.
And perhaps above all else, Crash 4 was really damn difficult, evidently refusing to tone itself down for modern sensibilities, instead staying true to the tough-as-nails original game.
In fact, Crash 4 was enough of a success that it helped spark renewed interest in the originals, which had handily received a gorgeous remaster back in 2017.
While playing the very first Crash today isn't without its frustrations - given Crash's more limited mobility and the game's utterly punishing Game Over mechanics - it nevertheless remains a compulsively thrilling platformer, and one which Crash 4 feels like a holistic evolution of.
