10 Video Game Trailers That Spoiled WAY Too Much
These spoilerific video game trailers had no chill whatsoever.
While there's a fair argument to be made that spoiler culture is unhealthily out of control across media these days, there's also something to be said for the thrill of discovering a shocking or unexpected moment without prior knowledge.
Though a great moment should hit regardless of whether you know it's coming, the first time watching a movie or playing through a video game without knowing the big moments ahead of time has an undeniable purity to it.
But video game publishers in particular just can't help themselves, and with the industry being as precarious as it is these days, it's not surprising that they've got little desire to restrain themselves, to hold back on the cool stuff.
Rather, modern video game marketing is often intensely spoiler-packed, to give players every incentive possible to buy the game on launch, even if such an aggressively spoilerific approach might ultimately impact the player's overall experience.
And it's certainly true that these 10 video games all got a little overzealous in their marketing, freely giving away moments that most players would've absolutely preferred to go into blind...
Spoilers follow. Obviously.
10. Jackie's Death - Cyberpunk 2077
The E3 2019 trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 - which was released roughly 18 months before the actual game - spoiled the death of protagonist V's best friend Jackie Welles, enough that most seemed to assume it would occur incredibly early on in the game.
Yet Jackie's demise is actually the inciting incident which brings Cyberpunk's first act to a close, and even if you're sticking to the critical path you'll probably take about four hours to get to the scene.
Even accepting that Cyberpunk offers a roughly 30-hour story and Jackie effectively dies at the end of the prologue, did CD Projekt Red really need to spoil it ahead of time?
It surely didn't help sell the game to anyone by itself and just deprived players of experiencing a rather crushing moment of character development totally fresh.
Jackie dying wasn't exactly tough to predict, but even so, knowing how and when it was coming took some of the wind out of its sails.
