10 Video Game Tropes We're Sick Of

7. Time-Sensitive Missions

Ah - free time! No school, no work, no family obligations. Just you and your new game. Time to relax. If by relax you mean willingly enter an unavoidable time-pressured situation.

This type of mission is usually designed to test your skill under specific circumstances, but it usually just tests your patience. Kill x number of enemies in a minute. Get over there in under 30 seconds. Protect this area until the getaway vehicle is fixed. One of the most irritating moments in gaming is when you're just about to pass a timed section... but you don't. And now you have to perform the whole task again.

Games are increasingly expensive, so being able to spend as much time as possible playing a game you love without constraints is a joy, and this trope undermines that.
