10 Video Games Based On Horror Movies You've Completely Forgotten About
4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Having watched Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it's easy to note its raw and grisly aesthetic. It's such a visceral experience even to this day, so to think that somebody decided it makes the perfect material to turn into a video game with cartoony colours is...curious.
It's also not the kind of title you'd expect to see on the Atari 2600 - a console that resulted in the likes of Space Invaders and Pac-Man arriving in our homes, but these were obviously simpler times.
There is a fair amount of notoriety associated with this release of yesteryear. It's arguably one of the earliest forms of the horror video game, and as a result, is also one of the first to allow you to control a chainsaw-wielding killer and murder a bunch of innocent civilians to earn a high score. Not something you'd want to put in your child's stocking at Christmas.
Unsurprisingly, at a time when the term 'video nasty' was sweeping the UK, retailers opted either to not stock it or put it out on the shelves. This led to awful sales, very few people to play it, and allowed it to join Halloween as a rare retro title that barely saw the light of day.
