10 Video Games Inspired By H.P. Lovecraft

4. Sunless Sea

Amnesia The Dark Descent
Failbetter Games

Much like the aforementioned Lovecraftian love letter Cultist Simulator, Sunless Sea doesn’t provide the player with much in the way of structure. Though players are able to choose from a number of predetermined goals like amassing a fortune or experiencing enough crazy things to return home and write a book about them, the game never really explains how sailors are to go about pursuing any of these endgame scenarios, and it’s all the better because of that.

Once again, this title doesn’t have anything explicitly to do with Lovecraft, but any major fan of his writing will know that many of his works stemmed from his deep-seated fear of the ocean’s depths. It’s a natural fear which many of us share, and it is exploited to the nth degree in Sunless Sea.

The core of the game centers around slowly venturing out into deep, uncharted waters and finding out just what lurks beyond the pale mist of the unknown. Is the crew bound for a much-needed safe haven, or will they encounter some unspeakable terror of the sunken oceans? Thanks to the game’s randomly generated map, none can ever say for sure.
