10 Video Games That Almost Had The Perfect Ending (But Ruined It)
4. The Prince Loses...Until The DLC Happens - Prince Of Persia (2008)
2008's cel-shaded Prince of Persia reboot was broadly praised by critics, though there was undeniable division among fans over its ballsy ending, in which Princess Elika sacrifices herself to defeat antagonist Ahriman.
What left many fans bemused was that The Prince doesn't simply accept Elika's sacrifice, but instead decides to cut down the Tree of Life and use its light powers to resurrect her.
The game then ends with The Prince carrying a revived Elika across the desert as Ahriman's corruption once again spreads throughout the world, all because The Prince couldn't cope with a single person dying.
It's one of the most fascinatingly twisted endings to any AAA game, really, because as infuriating as The Prince's decision is, it's also easy to imagine many of us making such a selfishly "human" decision at the critical moment.
But amid fan protest, Ubisoft remedied this bummer ending with the game's Epilogue DLC, which consists of Elika complaining about The Prince resurrecting her, and the pair teaming up to defeat Ahriman again before going their separate ways.
How Ubisoft thought this was in any way superior to the daring original downer ending is anyone's guess. The lesson here? Fans shouldn't always get what they want.
