3. Pong
Who would have thought that the game that started it all way back in the 1970s was actually a rip-off itself? Magnavox Odyssey's Table Tennis came first, and Atari promptly decided to make off with it; though the basis of the game is simple, there's no mistake they stole it, and the glut of rip-offs that followed - likely unaware of the original game - was staggering. Not idiots, Magnavox sued Atari, winning $700,000 to license the game, which might have seemed like a steal at the time, but given how iconic Pong has become, and how most people haven't heard of Magnavox's title, it's daylight robbery, really. This is an instance of one game managing to overcome controversy - probably because gaming wasn't exactly a big deal back then - and going on to become probably the most famous video game of all time. So good for Atari, even if their success is not coloured by the theft.
