Deus-Ex had spent an entire game setting up this intricate nest of morality. There were shady businessmen, corporate deceit and corruption bleeding through the walls. The player was thrust into this melting pot of intricate characters and plots that were all tangled together in this delightful mystery.
Basically, Human Revolution had everything going for it.
And instead of having the player make a meaningful decision at the end by deciding to make a bold move, they decided that it would be simpler for the player to press a button to decide their ending. Literal buttons. Like just in a line...
It removed any moral choice and reduced the choices to a list of cutscenes. You didn't have to sacrifice anything or balance any moral weight. You just saved and pressed each button one after the other, with no real weight or gravity behind them.
