2. The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
Picture the scene: You have fought through hordes of undead, flown on the back of a dragon and battled your way into the land of the dead. The rousing score marks your descent onto the battlefield, and you are joined by companions of yore, fabled heroes of bygone eras to face down the world-eater. And the actual fight? Well, its the same as the last time you fought him, just... with a more purple sky...
It was so disappointing because the game had every reason to go all out. You had gone to the afterlife of all places. You could have had Alduin turn into a mountain like dragon or had him literally eating planets. But instead, it is the same fight you've fought a hundred times.
It was such a hollow ending. It was all spectacle and no substance. Then again, Elder Scrolls aren't known for fantastic endings. The ending of Oblivion pretty much made it explicitly clear that you weren't the main character. The final boss fight of that game was fought by a NPC of all people. At least it was Sean Bean...
