Resident Evil 7 was a bit of a reset for the series, giving us the tale of the Ethan and Mia Winters. Ethan overcomes the Baker Family to save his wife, cures her of the infection inside of her body and they are ultimately rescued by series veteran Chris Redfield.

Unlike those such as Chris and Leon, Ethan is no soldier or Government agent and is merely a regular man who finds himself yet again dragged into the world of bioterror for the sequel. That being said, Resident Evil Village opens with a warm and all too normal scene that you just know can’t last.

Now a Father, Ethan puts little daughter Rosemary in her crib before sitting down for dinner with Mia. Suddenly, the power goes out and in that instance Mia is shot. Not just once, but totally ripped apart by bullets. Chris Redfield barrels in and, with no explanation, takes Ethan’s infant child. After Redfield’s transport crashes and his daughter is nowhere to be seen, Ethan (now believing himself to be a widower) sets off to find the only thing that matters to him.

Later scenes in the game put this opening in a very different perspective but kicking off a title by killing Mia Winters, who players worked so hard to save in Resi 7, and literally snatching Ethan’s baby out of his hands? Brutal.
