Now it's Rare's turn under the spotlight. Kameo: Elements of Power started off development on the Nintendo 64, only to end up on the Xbox 360. Its development cycle is notable for crossing four seperate consoles as the studio worked to refine the game and found their work transfered through generations.

At first, it was Rare's next project for the Nintendo 64, following in the footsteps of Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark and Donkey Kong 64. The game was about capturing and training creatures that would follow the player around, very much like a certain Nintendo handheld series. However, when that console generation moved on, Kameo would move to the Gamecube, which would offer more power to realise their vision.

Yet, after they were bought out by Microsoft in 2002, the focus changed again. Now Kameo was marked for the Xbox, losing many of the elements that were inspired by Pokemon. A more tribal tone took hold, with the titular protaganist using her elemental powers to progress through the game. Development persisted for some time after that and as the Xbox 360 arrived, Kameo finally came out as a launch title.

With so much coverage surrounding its creative progression, the game was able to make some day one owners happy, even if Rare would never make it into a full-on franchise.
