10 Video Games That Literally Dragged You Through Hell
1. Dantes Inferno
Probably the first game you'll think of when you think about journeys through Hell is Dante's Inferno. That's precisely because that's what this game is; a (very loose) action-rpg adaptation of the first part of the legendary Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri.
Guided by the lost spirit of Virgil, another epic Middle Ages poet, you control Knight-Templar Dante as he hacks and slashes his way through all of the Nine Circles of Hell with Death's own scythe. He's on a quest to absolve himself of the atrocities he committed during the Crusades, as well as to rescue his lover Beatrice from none other than Lucifer.
Each of the circles offers the player a number of levels in vastly different locales. There is the "Carnal Tower" in the domain of Lust which is filled with succubi, the icy realm of Treachery where Lucifer is supposedly locked away beneath Lake Cocytus, or the maggot-infested intestinal realm of Gluttony, to name but a few. Its an increasingly horrifying world, made worse by the revelations we get about our own protagonist as we see off more of Lucifer's minions in truly brutal fashion.
