3. Unnecessary Retcons & Gameplay Choices - Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Due to Final Fantasy VII's unparalleled success, it was no surprise when it spawned prequels, sequels, and movie adaptations. Even though churning out tie-ins could damage the brand's legacy, we ate it up. FFVII had so many unanswered questions, we were eager to revisit Midgar and learn more about the cast.

So, when Square Enix announced a prequel called Crisis Core that centred around Zack Fair, fans were as fired up as Ifrit. Because Zack was integral to FFVII's plot despite barely appearing, gamers were pumped to see the former SOLDIER member get fleshed out. Not only that, but Aerith, Cloud, and Sephiroth would also have their backstories expanded on.

Although Crisis Core was well received, there are aspects of the story and characterisation that dilute the original. Like The Phantom Menace, the narrative forces these members of the ensemble to have a connection, for the sake of fan-service. (Zack is the person who named Tifa's bar?? Really???)

The game also spends needless time on trivial matters, like having Zack suggest Aerith become a flower girl, or having you manually deflect missiles from decimating a village, in one of the weirdest minigames in Final Fantasy history.

Due to the awkward script, a lot of the potentially insightful dialogue comes across as dull. As such, Crisis Core fails to explore these beloved characters as much as it could have.
