10 Video Games That Mocked You For Buying The Sequel
7. Spec Ops: The Line
Fans of the tactical shooter series Spec Ops were in a dark place in the decade following 2002, as their beloved franchise (which already had nine titles to its name) was devoid of new content. That, thankfully, changed when the series returned in 2012 with Spec Ops: The Line. However, this game did more than revive an old series; it looked right into your soul and said, "you're wrong for wanting this."
For the uninitiated, Spec Ops: The Line was a fascinating video game that shattered the fourth-wall and openly criticised the glorification of violence and militarism in the gaming industry. It initially played out like a good old fashioned military shooter but soon devolved into a painful mess as you actively took part in horrendous war crimes and immoral actions.
Besides the narrative selling the horrors of war and American imperialism, it also talked straight to you in some meta loading screens. These intrusive moments said things like, "do you feel like a hero yet," "you're still a good person," and "this is all your fault."
Overall, it looked at you and asked, "why did you buy this?" and "why do you want to live out the horrors of war?". Damn, that's one hell of a truth bomb.
