There are some games that are formulaic, and there are some that are art. And then there are some that are just such beautiful assaults on the eyeballs, that they need to be seen to be believed. Over the years we've had Rez, Hotline Miami, Furi and Journey.

Now, there's Sayonara Wild Hearts to add that to that niche, too.

It's a simple enough game to play, akin to Panzer Dragoon or another rail shooter. There are points to be scored, some Tarot decks to complete, and a colourful, vibrant story about heartbreak to go through.

All set to the backdrop of some catchy pop tunes and battling the J-Pop versions of the T-Birds from Grease. If players aren't tapping their feet in time to their button prompts, something is amiss.

The thing is, unless you really want to listen to the soundtrack on repeat, there's not much incentive to play it through again. The fights are all the same prompts, the quick-reflex moments are the same obstacles to avoid.

It's definitely worth playing, but don't expect the glory to sustain on each level repeat.
