10 Video Games That Punish You For Caring

7. Rage 2

Metal Gear Solid V
Bethesda

Id Software's original Rage wasn't anything to write home about. Its graphics were spectacular for the time, but other than that it was a generic shooter that ended abruptly with zero resolution to an admittedly forgettable story. So who is Rage 2 punishing if not those who played the original?

Everyone who played and loved the criminally underrated Mad Max game.

Both developed by Avalanche Studios, 2015's Mad Max was a surprising cult hit. Despite some derivative mechanics, it blended a fast and weighty driving with brutal, improvised combat and survival elements in an open world that felt like a Mad Max-themed amusement park.

Unfortunately it bombed and Avalanche was put in charge of making Rage 2, a sequel nobody asked for. What's frustrating is that Rage 2 feels so close to the Mad Max 2 that could have been. Driving still feels fun and satisfying and the gunplay is extremely well-made - but gets old very fast in a huge open-world game.

But it looks so much like Mad Max, and at times, plays so much like Mad Max that it's impossible not to be distracted and deflated by thoughts of what could have been.
