The Velvet Assassin saw the player take on the role of British Spy, Violette Summer. Injured and lying in hospital, Violette relives her most daring missions across France, Germany and Poland in her fight against the Nazis. While primarily a stealth game, Violette had limited combat prowess and could attack her pursuers if required.

Violette – real surname Szabo – was, in reality, French, though it is true she worked with the British SIS in the war.

Her family lived in London at the time of the outbreak of WW2 and her beauty, athleticism, bravery and fluency in French made her the perfect spy. Her first mission saw her posing as a secretary while reporting back the status and position of armament factories in the surrounding regions. Her information allowed the allies to destroy key targets and slow the German advance.

Unfortunately, her second mission was met with disaster when she was intercepted by a German Panzer division (the leader of which, Kampfe, might be loose inspiration (in name, at least) for the game's antagonist, Kamm). Violette was captured, tortured and eventually sent to a concentration camp when she was executed at just 23-years old.
