10 Video Games That Were SAVED From Destruction
7. Bayonetta 2
Another entry, another Nintendo game. But this time round, the House of Mario found themselves acting as the saviour rather than the aggressor, as without their help Bayonetta's journey would have ended after a single game.
As detailed in a series of tweets from Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya (translated by Nintendo Everything), the series was originally published by SEGA. However, despite the first game's sterling critical reception SEGA ultimately decided that it didn't sell well enough to justify funding a sequel .
Which was problematic, as Kamiya and co. had already started developing Bayonetta 2 before the news came down.
Rather than scrap the project, Kamiya shopped the sequel around to various publishers until Nintendo stepped in and gave the embattled developers the funding they needed to create - for this writer's money - the greatest Character Action game ever made.
A heartwarming tale, and also one that highlights how much Nintendo had changed in the seventeen years between Goldeneye and Bayonetta 2. Strange to think that the company that once quailed at the relatively tame violence of Goldeneye would have no qualms about associating itself with Bayonetta - a character whose intro scene sees her shoot, spank and suplex an army of angels while suggestively licking a lollipop (basically, don't expect her to be making a cameo in the next Super Mario Bros. movie).
