5. Resident Evil
Resident Evil may not have invented the Survival Horror genre, but it damn sure popularized it. Capcom's winning blend of superlative audio and creature design, brilliantly bad voice acting and puzzle-filled mansions proved to be a winning formula, kick-starting a franchise juggernaut that managed to pull Capcom back from the brink of bankruptcy.
Which makes it all the more remarkable that the venerable game studio almost beheaded its golden goose before it had the chance to lay a single gilded egg for them.
As explained by WhatCulture's Psy White, Resident Evil did not follow a straightforward path to shop shelves. Many of the game's developers were woefully inexperienced with creating 3D games, resulting in a high number of resignations that resulted in even more work being placed on the remaining staff. Things got so bad that a consulting company were brought in, who concluded that there was no way the remaining team could deliver a satisfying game and that Capcom should cut their losses and cancel the project. Fortunately, Resident Evil was saved by a last-minute play from Capcom's star quarterback Tokuro Fujiwara, who convinced Capcom to let the team finish their work.
And thus one of gaming's greatest franchises was saved from the dustbin of history. Proof, if any more were needed, that most consultants can be summarized by the first three letters of their job title...
