1. Half-Life Alyx
Half-Life Alyx has been a long time coming. Series fan have been waiting since 2007 for a follow up, after Half-Life 2: Episode Three was famously cancelled and left the franchise on a cliffhanger ending.
So when Valve announced last November that they were developing Alyx as a flagship title for their Index headset, anticipation was understandably high. It saw an unprecedented push in hardware sales, leaving the Oculus Quest and Valve Index on backorders for several months amongst other shortages.
Releasing last week, it sees you playing Alyx Vance, Gordon Freeman’s companion across Half-Life 2. Set five years before Gordon’s arrival in City 17, it focuses on her fight against the Combine with her father, Eli Vance.
It’s not be Half-Life 3 but it’s important to remember that it was never meant to be. Featuring a full-length campaign, beautiful presentation and engaging story, it launched to critical acclaim and has proven itself a worthy successor.
There’s no denying the impact other titles have held on Virtual Reality but Alyx may just be it’s first killer app.
