Beat Games

Beat Saber wasn’t the first music game for VR but it’s certainly the most influential. Created by Beat Games, their debut title swapped the plastic accessories of the Rock Band/Guitar Hero-era for a headset and motion controllers.

Controlling two coloured light sabers, each song presents with a set of coloured blocks to slice with the corresponding saber, all timed with the music. You get scored based on how well-timed these cuts are made, with a multiplier in effect that builds up with consecutive hits.

It's purely a music game and there’s no story here, just a campaign mode with different challenge objectives for songs.

Becoming the focus of many streamers, its popularity was fuelled by the modding community who began making thousands of custom songs and has now sold over 2 million copies, making it one of VR's best-selling games.

It’s a perfect starting point for players with it’s simple but effective premise, proving how VR can take an experience that one step further.
