10 Video Games That Totally Nailed Their Final Levels
6. Goldeneye
Movie licensed games are usually pretty naff, thanks to a failure to capture the essence of a movie itself or awful game development. Goldeneye is a bit exception to this rule; not only is it a great movie spin-off, it pretty much redefined the FPS genre on consoles when it was released. The final mission of the game is called Cradle and it is set on the antenna of a radio telescope, aping the final events of the film. The player, as Bond, has to chase down Alec Trevelyan before he can trigger the Goldeneye satellite's firing mechanism once more. It's a tense mission as the player is on a time limit, pretty much from the get-go. There's a beautiful dose of personal vendetta sprinkled over proceedings too, as Bond finally gets the opportunity to chase down Trevelyan, a traitor to MI6. The final sections are based entirely on that chase, with Bond taking pot-shots at Trevelyan as they traverse the cradle. Eventually, just like in the movie, the two end up on a tiny platform at the very tip of the antenna with Bond, moments before killing him, countering Alec's mocking "For England, James?" with an ice cold "No, for me." It's such an awesome way to end the game. Goldeneye will always be remembered for it's innovative multiplayer and the campaign overall which is also excellent throughout, but could've been just as revered for this final moment alone.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
