5. The Last Of Us

The Last Of Us is an emotional rollercoaster from its very first moments, showing players the downfall of society and the lengths humanity will go to when it's on its last legs. It's not an entirely bleak affair though; there are scenes and events which offer the player hope that the world will be restored to a stable state at the game's conclusion. Then, the game enters it's final act and all that hope is sucked out of the window. Joel and Ellie's journey across the United States ends in Salt Lake City, the city in which the Fireflies have taken refuge. Here, Ellie is taken away to be operated on with the Firefly surgeons eager to remove a parasite from her brain to develop a cure for the virus from, almost certainly killing Ellie but potentially saving humanity. In a desperate bid to save the girl he now views as a daughter, Joel attacks the Fireflies in the hospital in a tense, high-stakes scene. Naughty Dog absolutely nailed the sense of urgency in this level, as the player almost desperately forces Joel through the twisting hallways of the area before it's too late. To top it off, the shocking final scenes of the game are phenomenal, creating all manner of debate and discussion; The Last Of Us is a game that will be talked about for years to come and the final level plays a big part in that.
