10 Video Games Way Weirder Than Advertised
2. Bugsnax
PS5 launch title Bugsnax was advertised as a cutesy, harmless little adventure game in the vein of Pokémon Snap, whereby players had to seek out and collect an array of colourful and delightfully weird creatures.
As adorable and creative as the game's titular insect-food amalgams were, beneath the child-friendly exterior lied a more unsettling truth.
Though it was made clear pre-release that eating the Bugsnax caused mutations in the ravenous locals known as Grumpuses, the real nature of the Bugsnax themselves was far from what it seemed.
Late in the game, it's revealed that the Bugsnax are actually parasites which cause anyone who eats them to become addicted until they themselves become Bugsnax. Odder still, Snaktooth Island is itself made of Bugsnax.
While some canny fans and journalists did indeed suspect that there might be something stranger festering beneath the surface, few could've anticipated quite how body horror-centric Bugsnax would ultimately be.
If perhaps not quite disturbing enough to make it entirely unsuitable for children, the implications of its various revelations are still utterly horrifying.
