10 Video Games We Still Can't Believe Got Cancelled
6. Aliens: Crucible
Despite having a name close enough to Aliens: Colonial Marines to make even the most hardened fans shudder, Aliens: Crucible had the potential to be a ground-breaking game for its time. Originally pitched by SEGA in 2006, the license was given to Obsidian Entertainment to create an RPG based in the Alien universe.
Obsidian are made up of the minds behind Fallout 1, 2, New Vegas and, most recently, The Outer Worlds. The point you should take from this is that they know how to make a great RPG. This particular project would have seen a crew of customisable characters attempting to survive a Xenomorph infestation on a large space colony.
Planned features included unique skills and abilities for different characters, a necessity for teamwork, multiple possible outcomes and endings, as well as perma-death for any unlucky crew members. The game would also feature a companion system, similar to a Fallout or Mass Effect title.
In early 2009, SEGA announced an indefinite suspension of Aliens: Crucible’s development, then officially announced its cancellation in June of the same year. Whilst no official reason was given, there was speculation that executives weren’t happy with the finished product.
Maybe there weren’t enough loot-boxes or surprise mechanics.
