10 Video Games Where The Bad Ending Is Canon

Here's a fun one.

I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream is a point-and-click horror game based on Harlan Ellison's 1967 short story of the same name, and in the game's marketing, Ellison insisted that it was a game that the player "cannot possibly win."

Given that Ellison's short story indeed had an epic downer ending, where protagonist Ted is transformed into an amorphous gelatinous blob incapable of even offing himself, it absolutely made sense that the game would end the same way.

But Ellison was ultimately convinced to include a single happy ending in the game, with the seventh ending allowing players to defeat malevolent supercomputer AM and start terraforming Earth to make it habitable once more.

Yet Ellison has always been clear that he wanted the game to be unwinnable and favours the other six endings - all which are just different flavours of depressing and hew much closer to the novel's bleak outcome.
