More often than not, if a game makes you work hard for the happier ending, that's going to be the one that ends up being canon, right? Right?

Not quite in the case of Metro 2033. In the "bad" ending experienced by most players, protagonist Artyom allows the missile strike to take place, obliterating the Dark Ones' hive and seemingly destroying them.

The so-called "enlightened" ending, meanwhile, can be accessed by committing moral actions throughout your playthrough - such as not killing humans, handing out ammo, and listening to NPCs speak - and sees Artyom destroy the missile system at the last minute, refusing to destroy the Dark Ones.

But in a suitably cynical move, such enlightenment is shown to be beyond our grasp, as sequel Metro: Last Light reveals that Artyom did indeed fire the missiles.

Given that this is also the ending of the original Metro 2033 novel, it absolutely makes sense that it would be canon in the games, even if those who put in all the extra effort for the happy ending might feel a little hard done-by.
