10 Video Games You Didn't Realise Shut Down In 2024

9. Super Mario Maker

Super Mario Maker was released for the Wii U in September 2015 and the Nintendo 3DS the very next year, proving itself to be a phenomenally popular creative outlet for Mario fans, enough that a sequel for Nintendo Switch came out in 2019.

The game was initially delisted from the Nintendo eShop in January 2021, with the ability to upload new courses being discontinued shortly thereafter, though it wasn't until last April that Super Mario Maker's full online suite was shut down, preventing players from downloading any previously uploaded courses.

However in something of a positive departing note, mere days before the game's servers went down the community did manage to beat the final user-uploaded level that nobody had previously been able to complete - an infamously, infuriatingly difficult stage called "Trimming the Herbs."

Though Super Mario Maker 2 arguably surpassed its predecessor in every way, it was still a sad blow for game preservation to see such a spirited well of creativity be wiped out.
