10 Video Games You Only Like Because Everyone Else Does

5. Shenmue

Shenmue II
Sega

When Shenmue III (or rather, its Kickstarter page) was announced at E3 last year, the internet went into meltdown. From the reaction you'd have thought that Half-Life III or something had been announced, not a moderately successful RPG revival that hasn't been relevant for over a decade.

But you can see why everyone wanted to get involved in the hype: Shenmue is a genuine cult classic, with a rabid fanbase that's desperate for any kind of new release. But there's no denying that the franchise is a very niche product, with slow (and kinda boring) gameplay that's definitely an acquired taste.

It's just not an accessible series, and the massive hype surrounding the latest announcement seems incongruous with the minimal impact the first two titles had fifteen years ago.

The games aren't for everyone (I could never get into them myself, despite multiple attempts), so it's not crazy to expect to see plenty of these new fans being disappointed by the return of this niche series once the third title finally drops.
