10 Ways God Of War PS4 Was Almost COMPLETELY Different
3. Atreus' Identity Was A Late Addition
God of War's ending is beautiful, shocking, and tantalising. First, there's the scene when Kratos and Atreus spread the Mother's ashes over Jotunheim, and it's an emotional scene. Then there's the big reveal, which we'll get to soon, that made jaws drop. And finally, there's the "after credits" scene, in which Thor shows up and gets everyone salivating over a potential fight in the inevitable sequel.
That second moment however, in which Atreus casually mentions that, on the murals in Jotunheim, his name was not Atreus... but Loki. It's one of the game's best, most hard-hitting moments. So you might surprised to hear it was a relatively late addition to the story.
Barlog said in a podcast that he was in his office one day when one of the other developers walked in and pitched him an idea. He said, verbatim, the line that ended-up in the game; "I guess there's just one thing I don't understand. My name on the wall, the giants called me... Loki?"
That huge reveal changes everything about the game and provides some massive ramifications for future games. The studio went back and laced in some hints throughout the story and Atreus' character was complete.
