The Power Sneakers are an item found within boxes around levels in Sonic the Hedgehog, starting from the very first game in the series. But, why does Sonic, the fastest hedgehog in existence, need a shoe-based power-up that makes him go faster?

It makes me wonder if Sonic really was held back by busted sneakers, as the 2020 film suggests. Once acquired, your speed increases and the music follows suit, there’s your power-up. It’s a simple concept and the result is that Sonic now becomes too fast, too furious to handle. In fairness to the hedgehog, speed is his game. However, as soon as you pick these up you’ll feel regret, spikes and constant contact with enemies until the power-up ends or more likely, you die.
