It’s argued that the involvement of cigarettes is purely for storytelling purposes and eventually, the games moved to showcasing electric cigarettes and the like. They’re still an in-game item, though and they do give you certain powers dependent on which game you’re smoking them in.

For example, they’ll help you detect lasers, lower your psyche and even steady your aim. Small, simple results that aren’t too far from Fallout’s chems. Even more so when you factor in that if you smoke, you’ll lose health. A sacrifice relatable to the real world and just like reality, it’s really not worth the risk. Especially if the reward is being able to see lasers and aim better... As the game preaches alongside characters smoking, cigarettes are bad (just like their uses in game). In light of that, we’re not sure if their presence is a metaphor or if it’s just a poorly designed item.
