10 Worst Video Game Checkpoints EVER

1. Holoholo Bird - Baiten Kaitos Origins

Grand Theft Auto IV
Monolith Soft

Cult classic RPG Baten Kaitos Origins is an especially egregious example of a checkpoint intended solely to mess with players and give them a bit of a "skill check" - to ensure they're actually ready to tackle the rest of the game.

Basically, the player is invited to save their game at the end of disc one, and the very beginning of disc two immediately throws them into an extremely challenging boss fight against the Holoholo Bird.

Due to the immediacy of the battle, there's no way for players to back up if they don't feel prepared for the fight, and so beyond trying out some different deck configurations, you're basically screwed if you can't get past it.

Though most players are advised to create a second save slot near the end of disc one to save themselves a major headache, for many who blindly went into the fight without this helpful information, they were forced to re-play the 15-ish hours of disc one all over again.

Or, you know, just drop the game forever. Awful.
