10 Xbox Achievements That Were Actually Stupidly Satisfying
1. The Part Where He Kills You Portal 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq0pKzcY_YQOf course, very few game developers understand entertainment in video games as well as Valve. Their games are laced with black humour, easter eggs and great characters.
The smash hit success of puzzle title Portal, originally bundled as an unknown entity on the Orange Box, was entirely unexpected (but not unwarranted) and the game is arguably now more popular than Valve's flagship title Half-Life (it's certainly seen more recent releases...).
Portal 2 was highly demanded and it's just as memorable as the first game with a longer campaign featuring some great characters (look out for J.K Simmons as Cave Johnson). The story mainly revolves around a power feud between original villain GlaDOS and new AI core Wheatley (voiced by the ridiculously tall Stephen Merchant); control of the Aperture Labs changes frequently between the two and our heroine Chell gets caught up in it (in fact, her direct involvement sees Wheatley take control in the first place).
Wheatley's power crazed ways come to a head right near the end of the game in a chapter called This Is The Part Where He Kills You. It's also introduced by GlaDOS (now in potato form) announcing it as you're propelled towards a spike filled death trap before Wheatley appears to confirm that this is the part where he kills you.
To top it off, arriving in this death trap rewards you with the beautifully well-timed This Is The Part Where He Kills You achievement; the repetition of the line creates such a memorable moment, only made sweeter by your inevitable escape from death. It's also a great showcase for the entertaining side of achievements when done well; they're here to stay (hopefully) so we might as well make them as enjoyable as possible.
Well done Valve. Why not reward your phenomenal achievements in achievements by releasing the sequel to Portal 2 sometime soon?
