100 Things You Never Knew About Resident Evil
71. The Sales Juggernaut Is Slain
Tracking historical video game sales numbers can be tricky business.
As of 2024, the biggest Resident Evil release sales-wise is RE2 Remake with an impressive 15.4 million copies. Considering how great the game it is, you might not be surprised by that but it succeeded where so many failed along the way.
Resident Evil 5 was a huge deal for the series; being the game that followed the critical darling RE4, the first multi-platform mainline title and, as such, the first RE on Xbox, and also the first numbered title to contain full co-op. Ergo, it sold very well across the PS3 and Xbox 360 and sits at a mighty 9 million units.
However, the game also got a rerelease on PS4 and Xbox One which is considered a separate SKU (stock keeping unit) by Capcom and therefore it's number is tracked differently. And, surprisingly, this rerelease did very well too going onto sell a further 4 million units. These combined kept RE5 at the top of RE sales data for 15 years.
That's a hell of a record to keep, especially for a game that rarely ranks amongst most people's favourites.
