66. 9/11 Happened in Resident Evil's World

Being that Resident Evil 6 is a breakneck action game, it has little use for some of the franchise's most enduring elements. Notes and diaries don't really make sense to the average player when there's no mystery to be solved except "how many bullets does it take to kill the next monster".

Whilst there are files in the menu of RE6, they're largely recaps of events. To get in-universe lore, fans had to go onto RENet for expanded versions of the files which included additional elements. Even then, at least one of these was changed when translated into English. The letter from President Benford to Leon that mentions the formation of their US Government anti-BOW taskforce makes a reference to the September 11th terrorist attacks in the Japanese version, tying it into the world of Resident Evil.

The translation from Project Umbrella reads:

"The United States has clearly not yet put an end to the long War on Terror after 9.11. On the contrary, it was exposed to the new menace of bioterrorism, and recently it's become difficult to confront these through the conventional organizational framework."

With RE6 releasing 15 years after the event it seems like an odd choice, but the question of whether RE even takes place in our world has always been up for debate so perhaps the change was made to keep that distance intact. Then again, the One World Trade Center is visible in Resident Evil Vendetta so who knows.
