11 Best Video Game Boss Battles Of 2015

6. Uruku Variant (Axiom Verge)

This is the old-school video game boss battle done to perfection, taking all the traits you loved from boss battles in games like Metroid, Contra and R-Type, but refining the mechanics and expanding the scale of the encounter tenfold. Every boss in Axiom Verge is pretty colossal compared to Trace, the game's diminutive hero, but Uruku here stands horns and weird anus-mouth opening above them. Even though you'll have bested quite a few formidable foes before getting to the Uruku variant, you'll be immediately taken aback by its size - emphasised by the fact that the camera needs to zoom out for the encounter. It's a classic 2D shooter battle of precise jumping, pinpoint shooting and lightning-quick reflexes, as you need to progressively destroy each of the puss-spewing maggot's weak spots. Uruku's arsenal of lasers and plasma guns will constantly force you to jump off your narrow platform vantage points and hide behind blocks, before you accurately and speedily jump your way back up to that top platform from which you can chip away at his plasma guns. Like much of Axiom Verge, this battle is very nostalgic, yet with the pace and excellent mechanics of a modern game.
