11 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Final Fantasy XV
5. It Started Life As 'Final Fantasy Versus XIII' Way Back In 2006
This may be one of the most well-known facts concerning FF XV, but it's still one of the craziest, all things considered.
The story goes that what is now known as Final Fantasy XV actually started life as 'Final Fantasy Versus XIII' back in 2006, a game that would tell a 'darker' parallel story to what was going to emerge as the regular FF XIII.
Over the course of development, the team hit a number of snags, including the basic fleshing out of the characters they'd chosen to focus on, a newer game engine being implemented, and later the information arriving that the PS4 and Xbox One were on the horizon.
The decision was then taken to rebrand and rework huge chunks of the game to make it a numbered instalment in the canon, yet this obviously extended development even further.
It's said that Versus XIII was "20-25% done" when this change was officially unveiled to the public in 2012, and it would take the remaining four years (and multiple delays) to eventually release what you can now buy as Final Fantasy XV. Phew!
