11 Video Games Where You're The Bad Guy - Commenter Edition

1. Spec Ops: The Line

Spec Ops The Line
Yager

I’m sounding my spoiler bell again, mainly because I really want you to play this and see the twist for yourself because Spec Ops: The Line is an absolute classic in the genre of games where you play as the bad guy. The game introduces you as Captain Martin Walker, a soldier sent into war torn Dubai with the goal of rescuing survivors and uncovering what happened to Colonel John Konrad who appears to have entered the battlezone and gone rogue.

Atrocities abound through the story and at the end it turns out the real Konrad took his own life some time earlier, and the version you’ve been talking to is a traumatic hallucination of Walker himself. It all gets very Heart of Darkness and there are multiple ways for the ending to play out depending on your choices. Perhaps what makes the game extra disturbing is you wouldn’t expect it to be anything out of the ordinary for a military shooter from the outset. An early clue is the loading screens, some of which just come up with the text, “Do you feel like a hero yet?” Nope, I super did not.
