12 Best Western-Themed Video Games Ever

6. Sunset Riders

Red Dead Redemption
Konami

This bright and barrel-busting side scroller was everything you’d expect from a beat ‘em up, only this game swapped roundhouses for revolvers and let you play with a total of four players on screen.

Starting out as a coin-op in 1991, developers Konami knew they were onto a good thing with this one and soon brought Sega and Nintendo along to the Wild West party.

Co-op experiences don’t get much better than Sunset Riders, with a typical stage working on multiple levels – i.e. our heroic bounty hunters can cause carnage on the ground or up on the rooftops – with the focus being very much on playful action. Throwing a bundle of dynamite back at some approaching bandits is satisfying and, although the end of level boss battles were tough, there are enough nifty moves at your disposal (the bullet dodge is a life saver) to ensure you always have a fighting chance of claiming your prize. Classic arcade action.
