12 Most Shocking Video Game Deaths Of 2016

1. The Player - Battlefield 1

The chilling opening script to Battlefield 1's surprisingly mature campaign reads, "What follows is frontline combat. You are not expected to survive."

The game's first skirmish places you in the shoes of a foot soldier who is inevitably killed in the heat of battle, at which point a name and date of birth and death, randomly generated and unique to each player, will flash up before the player is transported into the shoes of another soldier.

The process basically repeats from this point each time you die in the prologue, and considering how flippant historical shooters tend to be about the human cost of war, it was both shocking and refreshing to see a AAA title engage with the expendable nature of those on the front lines.

It's a shame this clever gimmick didn't actually carry through to the whole game, but EA opted for a more pointedly cinematic, character-driven experience instead.
