Anyone who bought Wind Waker on Gamecube will be aware of Master Quest. Released as part of a bonus disc, it provided players a new way to experience Ocarina with remixed dungeons, harder difficulty and altered puzzles.

If Nintendo’s plans had gone accordingly though, Master Quest could’ve been a lot more. Originally called Ura Zelda (Translating to Another Zelda), development began after completing Ocarina and would’ve restored cut content, featured new enemies, additional masks and the ability to edit your own dungeons.

Planned for release on the 64DD, Nintendo’s ill-fated hardware add-on, the 64DD flopped upon release after repeated delays and never saw a Western release. Most games were either cancelled, ported to normal N64 cartridges or later released on Gamecube and Ura Zelda was one casualty.

It was an ambitious idea and whilst we got a taste of it through Master Quest, we’ll sadly never get to experience the full product.
