12 Upcoming Video Games Blatantly Trying To Rip Gamers Off

12. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Charges For Continues In Raid Mode

The Game: This episodic video game is set between the events of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6. Claire Redfield is the protagonist this time for a fill-in-the-blanks side-story, which will also allow players to control Barry Burton. Why It's A Ripoff: While gradually releasing a game in installments to players can itself be a telltale sign of a ripoff, to Capcom's credit, they're only charging $25/£19.99 on Steam for what will apparently last around 8 hours over 4 episodes. Fans got majorly upset, however, when rumours began spreading that the game would charge players for continues after dying, and failure to cough up the cash would result in the player having to start the mission all over again. Eventually the truth was outed, that while this practice is not going to affect the core campaign, it does concern the optional Raid Mode. In this mode, players need special life crystals to continue playing after death, and these crystals can either be accrued by playing daily missions or by purchasing them with real currency. Will People Buy It Anyway?: The game itself? For this price point, absolutely. But what about the micro-transactions themselves? This model is essentially Capcom testing to see what they can get away with, and if people do buy into it, then expect the next main Resident Evil game to have a similar mechanism in its core campaign, which would of course be disastrous. Whether players will bite for it depends on how difficult it is to acquire these life crystals the "honest" way, which won't be known until reviews are out in two weeks' time.
