After Mortal Kombat Mythologies was hailed as the bane of the series (and creativity in general), you'd think the developers would just stick to the conventional fighting genre.

Instead, Midway Games released another spin-off two years later called Mortal Kombat: Special Forces. In this dreary prequel, our hero, Jax Briggs, battles the Black Dragon gang, which is led by the Terminator-inspired thug, Kano.

Before you play one second of Special Forces, you know it's gonna suck, based entirely on the opening.

Before you ask, yes, that is really how the game starts.

Rather than being a 2D sidescroller, Special Forces is a topview 3D beat 'em up, meaning it bares no resemblance to the franchise. In fact, you would never suspect this is a Mortal Kombat property if you swapped Jax out for another character.

You could somewhat forgive Special Forces' change of direction if the game made up for it in some way. But due to the murky graphics and derivative fighting mechanics, playing this stinker feels like a chore.

The levels are so bare, you can tell the company was having a difficult time, forcing the developers to trim content and remove key elements. In Mythologies defence (yes, this game makes you defend Mythologies) it felt like a Mortal Kombat title. Special Forces, on the other hand, feels like a forgettable beat 'em up.
