Here's a game disappointing not so much for what it did, but what it didn't do. The graphics, story, characters and gameplay of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes are all first-rate...it's just a shame that it only lasts for around 90 minutes, and is essentially a glorified retail demo for The Phantom Pain, due for release early next year. It's undoubtedly an impressive framework, with the strongest visuals of the series to date and a more free-form gameplay style than the franchise has ever seen, but it was ultimately just an infuriatingly brief tease for Big Boss' upcoming adventure. That the entire game, including the bonus assignments, takes place solely on the same stretch of map only compounds the disappointment. Though fine for a rental, anyone who forked out for Ground Zeroes expecting a worthy 6-to-8-hour prelude to The Phantom Pain no doubt wound up disappointed. The game's sole objective was to provide a cash injection for Hideo Kojima as he put the finishing touches on The Phantom Pain, and the rabid fanbase fell for it hook, line and sinker.
